SPIRIT OF DETROIT 60TH ANNIVERSARY OVERVIEW
The Spirit of Detroit was dedicated to the Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority (DWJBA) in 1958. The iconic sculpture located in front of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center on Jefferson Avenue celebrates its 60th Anniversary September 23, 2018.
The DWJBA is the owner and manager of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center (CAYMC) and the steward of Spirit of Detroit. As the city's civic center, CAYMC houses City of Detroit and County of Wayne municipal offices, courts and departments. As the governing body, the three person DWJBA Commissioners are appointed by the legislative bodies Detroit City Council and Wayne County Commission.

The Sculpture Meaning
The City of Detroit and County of Wayne seals are prominently displayed in the symboled marble wall behind the sculpture.
"Built as a representation of the basic hope of humanity, emphasized the symbolism of progress for the city, the Spirit of Detroit endures forever."
In its left hand is the gilt bronze sphere emanating rays of hope to symbolize God. The people in the right hand represent a family being lifted up by the Spirit of Detroit.
As one of Detroit's most easily identifiable landmarks and destinations, a sketch of the sculpture appears as the central element on many logos of city of Detroit departments, programs, services, public service announcements and commercials.
An image of the sculpture appears on the "Spirit of Detroit Award" issued by the Detroit City Council to a person, event or organization being honored for an outstanding achievement or service to the residents and quality of life in the city of Detroit.
